The Journey of Ambubai School for Blind Girls

Mathoshree Ambubai Residential School for Blind Girls began its journey under extraordinary and urgent circumstances. In 2007, when a private education trust abruptly shut down a school that had served blind girls for over a decade, it left students and families in deep distress—without support, without direction, and without any plan for continuation.

In this moment of crisis, Mr. Dattu Agarwal stepped forward with courage and compassion, taking it upon himself to ensure that these young girls would not be denied their right to education and dignity. With his unwavering commitment and the support of the Hyderabad Karnataka Disabled Welfare Society, the school was founded in June 2007 in Kalaburagi, Karnataka.

Since then, the school has grown from a response to crisis into a beacon of hope. Today, Matoshree Ambubai Residential School offers free education, training, and residential care for visually impaired girls aged 6 to 18. Our facilities include classrooms, a dining hall, dormitories, a kitchen, and a small playground—all built to foster a safe and supportive environment.

Students receive instruction in Kannada (as per the state syllabus), with English and Hindi as secondary languages. Braille education is delivered by a team of seven trained teachers, supported by dedicated non-teaching staff. We provide nutritious meals, regular medical checkups, and essential learning materials—all at no cost to the families.

Beyond academics, our girls engage in cultural events, sports, music, and life skills like cooking and gardening—building confidence and independence at every step.

Our journey is one of resilience, purpose, and deep belief in the potential of every child, regardless of ability. And we continue to walk this path with hope, strength, and the unwavering support of our community.

Where we are today

Today, the school provides a safe and nurturing home to over 75 blind students, offering both boarding and lodging. We’ve grown from our humble beginnings in a small rented apartment to a spacious two-story building, thoughtfully equipped with classrooms, a kitchen, and all the essential amenities to support the students’ education and well-being.

Our future plans

we plan to expand our vocational training, introducing digital literacy and entrepreneurship programs to help our students gain skills for self-employment. We aim to create a dedicated space for cultural and educational activities and enhance our healthcare services for more personalized care. Our goal is to continue fostering independence and self-reliance in every girl.

Our purpose

We strive to create a safe, supportive environment where visually impaired girls can grow with confidence. Our focus is on quality education, life skills, and vocational training that lead to real job opportunities. With better facilities, hands-on learning, and a strong push toward socio-economic rehabilitation, we’re helping them build independent and dignified futures.
